Terms and Conditions
Last updated: April 4, 2026
These Terms and Conditions ("Terms") govern your use of Scanos, including the browser extension, website, and related materials. By installing, accessing, or using Scanos, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use Scanos.
1. Scope of Service
Scanos is a local-only URL and button scanning tool. The extension is designed to run on your device and process data locally, except when you explicitly trigger a scan that sends a URL to VirusTotal.
2. Use License (Open Source)
The Scanos extension source code is licensed under the MIT License in the repository LICENSE file. Under that license, you may use, copy, modify, merge, publish, distribute, sublicense, and/or sell copies of the software, subject to including the required copyright and permission notice.
If there is any conflict between these Terms and the MIT License regarding rights to the extension source code, the MIT License controls for the code.
These Terms continue to apply to your use of the Scanos website, project branding, and any non-code materials unless another license is explicitly provided.
You agree not to:
- Violate applicable laws or regulations while using Scanos.
- Remove or alter required copyright, license, or attribution notices from copies or substantial portions of the software.
- Misrepresent your affiliation with, endorsement by, or authorship of the Scanos project.
- Use Scanos trademarks or logos in a way that infringes applicable trademark law.
- Attempt to interfere with, disrupt, or misuse the extension or website.
- Use Scanos to transmit harmful code or conduct abusive, fraudulent, or deceptive activity.
3. Your Responsibilities
You are responsible for how you use Scanos, including:
- Scanning only links or buttons you intend to check.
- Reviewing and complying with laws and internal policies applicable to your use.
- Evaluating scan results before taking action.
- Maintaining reasonable security for your browser profile and device.
4. VirusTotal and Third-Party Services
Scanos relies on third-party services, especially VirusTotal, for URL scan results.
- You must provide your own VirusTotal API key to use scanning features.
- Scan requests are sent directly to VirusTotal using your key.
- VirusTotal may process submitted URLs and related data under its own terms and privacy practices.
- Scanos is not responsible for third-party service availability, accuracy, policy changes, or data handling.
Review third-party terms before use:
5. Data Handling Context
Scanos does not require account registration and does not operate a Scanos-owned backend to collect your scanned URLs. API keys and extension settings are stored locally in your browser profile, as described in the Privacy Policy.
6. Open Source and Intellectual Property
Scanos includes open-source software components and may be distributed under applicable open-source licenses. Except where open-source licenses grant broader rights, all branding, trademarks, logos, and related brand assets remain the property of their respective owners.
7. No Security Guarantee
Scanos is a supplementary security tool. It does not guarantee that all URLs are safe, malicious, accurately classified, or suitable for your specific use case. False positives and false negatives can occur.
8. Disclaimer of Warranties
Scanos is provided on an "as is" and "as available" basis. To the maximum extent permitted by law, Scanos disclaims all warranties, express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement.
9. Limitation of Liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, Scanos and its contributors, affiliates, and suppliers are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, or for loss of data, profits, goodwill, or business interruption arising from or related to your use of Scanos.
10. Indemnification
You agree to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless Scanos, its maintainers, affiliates, and contributors from claims, damages, liabilities, and expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising out of your misuse of Scanos, violation of these Terms, or violation of applicable law.
11. Changes to Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time to reflect product, legal, or operational changes. Updated Terms will be posted with a revised "Last updated" date. Your continued use of Scanos after changes are posted means you accept the updated Terms.
12. Suspension or Discontinuation
We may modify, suspend, or discontinue any part of Scanos at any time without liability, to the extent permitted by law.
13. Governing Law
These Terms are governed by and interpreted under the laws of the United States, without regard to conflict-of-law principles.
